I have always been fascinated by the ephemeral nature of light. Capturing the light is everything! My camera has led me to seek out the less seen places and capture the ethereal qualities of the light there. I love dark textural tones and silvery highlights. I work predominantly in black and white, both in analogue and digitally. I think working in this way, without the use of colour, brings the viewer straight to the soul of the landscape. When I work, these words of Andri Cauldwell are never far from my mind: “To see in colour is a delight for the eye, but to see in black and white is a delight for the soul”. I aim to create dramatic moody landscapes and abstracts. I hope my photographs can awaken within the viewer an emotional affinity and appreciation of nature and of the world we share.
My practice is informed and inspired by the great American landscape photographers of the 20th Century, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Paul Caponigro and Ron Rosenstock. The landscape and the raw elements of the natural world have always been a constant source of wonder for me. I hope you can see this in the selection of photographs I've placed in this portfolio. These images are my homage to our natural environment. Like sentinels or silent observers, the rocks, trees and natural formations are the ancient souls of these lands, witnessing the passing of millennia, weathering the storms of life, yet all the while seeming to remain constant, solid and steady in a world of ceaseless change.
Enough! I don't like to over intellectualise my work, nor my relationship with my subject matter. I let my pictures do the talking. The work itself is my statement, it is who I am.
